Default Ticking 2002 Disco II - Unplug SAI Solenoid, ticking stops

Hey all, been driving me a bit nuts - just noticed yesterday - this ticking sound - sounds like lifters or valves tapping on drivers side - for whatever reason, I unplugged the SAI Solenoid electrical connection, and click stopped within a minute. Plugged it back in and ticking started again. Obviously when I unplug the connection - I get a SAI SES Code...

Also, can tripped up SAI cause lean codes? It could dump un-metered air into exhaust while running, correct?

I do not know if the SAI could cause lean codes, that is a great thought.
Same thing with unplugging the SAI and the tick going away.
This could be very useful info if you get it figured out.
There is a filter to the SAI that needs to be cleaned/replaced from time to time.
In the DII "write up" section there is a "how to" on how to replace that filter.

Thanks Spike.

Thinking this could be the source of the Disco II 2003 "tick' I have read about? I have a 2002 tho...

I pulled the canister filter out of my SAI filter housing and tapped it on the ground - pretty dirty....but nothing too bad - looks like a smaller oil filter.

Anyway, I will blow it out with compressed air and put it back in.

EDIT - just blew it out with compressed air - wasn't too dirty - seen much worse...

The SAI solenoid is $19 from BP of Utah...maybe I will just drop a new one in...

Subscribed. Let us know what happens with the new solenoid.

No the SAI can not cause lean or rich codes. What other codes are you getting?

Have not driven it for a few days, but there is a P0171 / P0174 Pending.

Also, where is the Fuel Pressure Regulator on a 2002 DII?

wait a minute, I have seen the two connector ends in that area get mixed up, one is for the purge valve and one is for the solenoid. double check the wiring codes but I believe the grey goes to the solenoid and the black to the purge valve. make sure the wiring colors match with the connectors.

Yes, I checked and the black connector is on the Purge valve...grey on the SAI solenoid

Im too getting the 1412 0171 code and I read someplace here to unplug the SAI pump to see if any changes so I did and cleared codes... and all of a sudden my engine smoothed out like it was new! and so far in 10 miles no codes or misfires.... the one thing though on cold startup it has started up nice.. 30 seconds in, it runs really rough and stumbles all at idle, then when engine warms up minute or 2 later it smooths out to a glassy purr... any suggestions? this is all with SAI pump plug detached.. but while attached of course 90 seconds of hair dryer sound and many misfires and or light stumbles along my trip, mostly when coming to stop and idling again... not to mention passenger side sounds like exhaust leak while SAI is plugged in but fortunately no ticking or tapping sound except normal engine whirr...

is this DIY bypass of SAI pump useful for anyone more knowledgeable here? http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?3111538 its from a VW site I was reading...
