95 Disco I w/ 154000. I don't know if my fuel filter has ever been replaced. I saw some past posts with its locale etc., but my questions are 1) how difficult is the process and 2) how often should this be done? I saw some posts saying to take off the passenger rear tire to make it easier. Any concerns on securing the fuel line, etc? Thanks guys.

 

Well how hard it is to do depends on how rusted the threads are.
The first time I changed mine it took me 3 hours.
Now I replace it every spring and it takes me 15 mins without removing the tire.

This is what I bought as mine was so rusted it would not come off to save my life.
Now I just go to AutoZone and buy a fuel filter for $15.
Take two wrenches and try to remove your filter, if you can get it loose then you can just buy a filter, if not then I HIGHLY recommend buying the fuel filter kit from AB.
No I do not know what size the nuts are on the fuel filter and fuel line.
The fuel line is bolted to the frame so no worries about securing it.

 

You will not be able to change the fuel filter as land rover intended... it will be so rusty that you must buy a kit (25 dollars) that will allow you to cut the line and put a new filter in.

depressurized the fuel line by removing the relay in the passenger side with the blue connector. then turn the key and let it turn over for 20 seconds, if it doesn't start, you should be all set

then install the new fuel filter fittings, and fuel filter

How often do we replace the fuel filter?
I have a diesel engine with 70K miles.
I'm not sure when it was last replaced.
I'm planning to have them replace tomorrow.

 

Gas engine once a year for sure, diesel engine is partially determined by the quality of your fuel. The less the filter is changed/service the less power you have. Do you also have a water trap?

 

On a gas DI change the fuel filter once a year simply because the threads will rust and you will never get the fuel filter off the truck.
LR recommends every 30,000 miles for a gas DI.
Most diesel cars recommend changing the fuel filter at every oil change.
When I had my Sprinter van that is what was recommended by MB and oil changes were every 10,000 miles.
I changed the fuel filter every 50,000 miles.

 

I just had the filter replaced, apparently it has never been replaced.
The mechanic removed the sedimentor (is this the water trap you are referring to Mike?) from underneath the truck near the rear axle, he took it out and I saw
light brown mud-like stuff at the bottom of the sedimentor, he cleaned it and put it back. He then replaced the fuel filter, not an OEM but he says its good also.
I don't know if Im just imagining but I felt that the truck is more responsive on my way home.
Fuel filter = $25
Labor cost = $6

 

Good deal, that was water/rust/dirt in the sediment bowl.
I dont know how many miles you drive a year, but once a year would be a good idea. Maybe every two depending on how much you drive.

 

How difficult of a project is it to remove the sedimentor? Curious as to whether i should add that task to the list.

 

Um, well, er...sorry, I know you are not a shade tree mechaninc and are learning, and are willing to learn and we are willing to teach.
The sedimeter is only on a diesel, it collects water and larger particles before the fuel goes to the fuel filter.
On cars before the 1940's they had a sediment bowl, a little glass bowl in the fuel line right before the carburator to collect water and dirt, it was glass so that you could see if it was full of water or dirt, close the fuel shut off valve, remove the bowl, empty and clean and then re-install.
Fuel filters take the place of the sediment bowl.
So do not add this to your list of to do's.
